Therawada Buddhism gave birth to a new civilization in Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said over the weekend. Prime Minister expressed this sentiment during the National Vesak Festival held at Totagamuwa Vihara on Saturday.

“Buddhism should be given the foremost place in the country in accordance with the Constitution and Sri Lanka should be made the centre of Therawada Buddhism in the globe,” the Prime Minister said.

“Our country’s traditions have been based on Buddhism but other faiths also had an impact on our society,” he added.

“The Totagamuwa Vihara is a foremost placed when it comes to the Kotte era. This temple was destroyed by the Portuguese. One can destroy temples buildings but they cannot destroy the faith that is in the minds of people. This is the reason why Buddhism will always survive in this country,” the Prime Minister also said.

He said monks such as Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera had done a great service for the survival of Buddhism in this country.
