New Islamic Education Institutions Bill will provide provisions to set up degree awarding institutes
The controversial Batticaloa University will be made open to students of all religions and races under the proposed Islamic Education Institutions Bill, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said. “Sri Lanka does not need Sharia universities therefore the new Islamic Education Institutions Bill will provide provisions to set up degree
awarding institutes which are open to any one irrespective of their religion or race,” the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister came up with this statement at a meeting he had with Muslim Affairs M. H. Abdul Haleem , other officials of the ministry and those in the Attorney General’s Department at Temple Trees last afternoon.
“The Bill will be presented to the Cabinet after another round of discussion with the officials of Muslim Affairs Ministry and the legal experts,” the Prime Minister said.
He said all higher education institutes will be made open to students of all religions and races.
Minister Abdul Haleem, Secretary to Ministry of Postal Services and Muslim Affairs S. M. Mohammed , Senior Legal Advisor to Prime Minister Bimba Tilakartne and other officials participated in the discussion.
