Cash, jew­ellery of lo­cal tourist stolen in Hikkaduwa

A man who stole jew­ellery to the value of more than Rs. 1.4 mil­lion and Rs.60,000 cash from a lo­cal tourist while he was en­joy­ing a sea bath in Hikkaduwa was ar­rested by the Hikkaduwa Po­lice yes­ter­day.

Part of the stolen jew­ellery was re­cov­ered by the Hikkaduwa Po­lice yes­ter­day from the 39- year- old sus­pect who was a lorry driver from Ratgama.

Un­der in­ter­ro­ga­tion the sus­pect de­scribed as to how he opened the door of the mo­tor­car

The com­plainant from Bangama in Akurassa, an ex­pa­tri­ate worker on hol­i­day in Sri Lanka, had vis­ited his brother in Ratgama and gone for a bath with sev­eral rel­a­tives near the Hikkaduwa sea. He told po­lice that he left his jew­ellery and cash in his mo­tor­car and re­turned af­ter the bath to find them miss­ing.

Un­der in­ter­ro­ga­tion the sus­pect de­scribed as to how he opened the door of the mo­tor­car and took away the cash and jew­ellery. He was to be pro­duced be­fore Galle Mag­is­trate yes­ter­day af­ter­noon. Hikkaduwa Po­lice were con­duct­ing fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tions to re­cover the rest of the jew­ellery.
