Cash, jewellery of local tourist stolen in Hikkaduwa

A man who stole jewellery to the value of more than Rs. 1.4 million and Rs.60,000 cash from a local tourist while he was enjoying a sea bath in Hikkaduwa was arrested by the Hikkaduwa Police yesterday.

Part of the stolen jewellery was recovered by the Hikkaduwa Police yesterday from the 39- year- old suspect who was a lorry driver from Ratgama.

Under interrogat­ion the suspect described as to how he opened the door of the motorcar

The complainan­t from Bangama in Akurassa, an expatriate worker on holiday in Sri Lanka, had visited his brother in Ratgama and gone for a bath with several relatives near the Hikkaduwa sea. He told police that he left his jewellery and cash in his motorcar and returned after the bath to find them missing.

Under interrogat­ion the suspect described as to how he opened the door of the motorcar and took away the cash and jewellery. He was to be produced before Galle Magistrate yesterday afternoon. Hikkaduwa Police were conducting further investigat­ions to recover the rest of the jewellery.
