JVP HANDS OVER NCM AGAINST GOVT.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday handed over a no-confidence motion to the Speaker against the government.
It consists of six allegations including that of the failure of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the government to take measures to prevent the Easter Sunday attack despite information on the attack being available.
The motion signed by party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and MPS Vijitha Herath, Nihal Galappatti, Sunil Hadunnetti, Bimal Ratnayake and Nalinda Jayatissa states that the government had failed to take action to ensure security in the country after the April 21 attack while some ministers had attempted to influence security forces when carrying out their investigations on suspects and that the government had failed to prevent the subsequent racial violence.
JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference that according to information available so far, there had been eight opportunities to prevent the Easter Sunday attack and said the government no longer had a right to take decisions regarding the security of the people. The MP said they would discuss at the party leaders meeting the possibility of taking up the NCM for debate during the next parliamentary week.
Responding to joint opposition allegations that the NCM against the government was a UNP contract, he said the JVP had no connections to the UNP whereas those who make such allegations were the ones who had gone behind the President and the Prime Minister to clear allegations of fraud and corruption against them.
When asked the stance of the JVP on the no-confidence motion against minister Rishad Bathiudeen, he said the JVP would stand on the side of the people when it was taken up in parliament.
