“ETHNIC DIVERSITY IN STUDENT ADMISSIONS”

Following the decision to take all Madrasas under the purview of the Education Ministry, the government has decided to change the compositio­n of schools to admit students from all ethnic groups, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasa­m said yesterday.

Addressing a media briefing, he

said during the past five years the government did not start any school dedicated to a particular religion or ethnic group. “Considerin­g the recent incidents that unfolded in the country, the government will admit students from different ethnic groups to schools which will be newly constructe­d. The government has decided to take all Madrasas under regulation­s set by the National Institute of Education,” he said.
