Global Seafoods signs BOI agreement to process Wakame seaweed

-

The Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka recently signed a supplementary agreement with Global Seafoods (Pvt.) Ltd to process Wakame seaweed for export in their existing factory complex.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the BOI by BOI Chairman Mangala Yapa and by Global Seafoods Director Radhika Subasinghe and Chandani Weragala signed on behalf of Nexia Corporate Consultants, secretaries to the company. Also present was Global Seafoods Group General Manager Parakrama Weerasinghe.

“Wakame is a seaweed found in the Pacific Ocean, which we will be importing from Japan, processing and re-exporting to Japan. It is used for Japanese cuisine, especially soups and some other dishes.

It is the first time that this product is processed in Sri Lanka, so Global Seafoods is very proud to be a pioneer in this field,” Weerasinghe said.

Global Seafoods Private Ltd started its operation in 1999 and is engaged in the processing and exporting of frozen and fresh fish globally.

The company’s markets are Europe and the USA. Global Seafoods also processes Sashimi grade salmon products in Sri Lanka to be exported to Japan. “That is also a new product for Sri Lanka export basket, which we introduced few years ago.

Earlier this particular salmon processing was done in Vietnam but we were able to persuade our buyers to process it from Sri Lanka,” Weeraisnghe said.

“We can therefore proudly say that Global Seafoods has introduced new fisheries and seafood products to Sri Lanka’s export basket,” he added.

Global Seafoods employs more than 250 staff and supports the local fishing industry by purchasing bulk of its raw material from local fishermen.
