YOGA FOR A CAUSE IN AID OF THE AWPA

Daily Mirror (Sri Lanka) - - PETS -

Shirabdi De Silva, a certified yoga teacher, will be conducting a yoga class in aid of the Animal Welfare & Protection Association. Shirabdi has trained in Ashtanga Vinyasa at Tattva Yoga Shala in Rishikesh and under the Knoff Yoga System with Yoga Master Nicky Knoff. The class will be designed on the Knoff Yoga System which combines the anatomical alignment of Iyengar Yoga with the energetic principles of Ashtanga Vinyasa. Shirabdi is a passionate animal lover and the proud owner of two brown beach dogs at Anawasal Resort, a pet friendly yoga retreat in Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka. All proceeds will be directly donated to the AWPA.

Being an animal lover and dog owner from childhood, Shirabdi has been a longstanding supporter of the AWPA. The AWPA was set up in 1963 by a group of animal lovers, and currently runs two residential shelters for over 450 dogs and cats in Colombo. The primary expense of the shelters are feeding costs, which amount to over Rs.10,000 per day. The AWPA also spends on administering medication, annual vaccinations, biannual worming, shelter staff salaries, and maintenance of the properties.

Sterilisation campaigns are a priority for the AWPA. Preventing unwanted litters contributes greatly to reducing dog numbers; and this dog population management is an important part of rabies control programme. Additionally sterilisation improves the quality of life for the animal. Campaigns are conducted in both urban and rural areas in several parts of the country.

Donations and support from the AWPA’S patrons are critical to its ongoing mission and activities. In addition to running shelters and sterilisation services, the AWPA also rescues street animals in distress, often after road accidents, injuries and other traumatic conditions. To register for the Yoga Class and learn from a professional instructor while also providing support to the AWPA’S mission, please SMS or Whatsapp 077 885 7778, or email [email protected]
