MEET MARLEY

BREED : LABRADOR RETRIEVER AGE: 3 YEARS OLD OWNER : THE DE FONSEKA FAMILY

- BY RIHAAB MOWLANA

He is a very loving dog and he has so much patience no matter what the situation.

Named after the spirited movie pet of the same name, this Marley is actually the opposite of his TV counterpart, according to the De Fonseka family. His relatively calm demeanor and patience coupled with his abundant love for everyone has made Marley an irreplaceable member of the family.

Q HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR PET?

Our daughter watched a movie about a dog and wanted one of her own. Since we are a family of dog lovers anyway, my husband and I decided we were ready to welcome one into our family. So after we explained to our daughter the responsibility that comes with being a pet owner and she understood, then we surprised her with Marley on her birthday.

Q WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME YOU’VE GIVEN?

The movie my daughter was referring to was Marley and Me. She fell in love with that movie and watched it countless times. She wanted her very own Marley, so named her own pup Marley as well.

Since it is “her” pup, my daughter has to share responsibilities. So she helps us feed and bathe Marley. Marley has two large meals and a third balanced meal everyday. Marley is also a very active, outdoorsy dog, so we make sure he is bathed at least once a week.

Q WHAT ARE MEAL TIMES AND BATH TIMES LIKE? Q WHAT’S HIS FAVOURITE THING TO DO?

He loves chasing remote controlled toy cars. He gets super excited when he sees the car and at other times, he goes and stands near the cupboard where it’s kept if he wants to play with it.

I had planted a few seeds in the garden. He dug it out and created a mess. He also destroyed a few flower pots. He is always very happy to see any of us.

It’s the way he leads us to places and things so that we work according to his plans for the day and not the other way around.

He is a very loving dog and he has so much patience no matter what the situation.

Q WHAT’S THE NAUGHTIEST THING HE HAS DONE? Q HOW DOES HE REACT WHEN YOU RETURN HOME? Q DOES HE DO ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY THAT FASCINATES YOU? Q WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT HIM? Q WHAT WAS THE MOST UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT YOU’VE SHARED WITH YOUR PET?

I would say what stood out was the process of Marley and our daughter bonding and as a result watching my daughter bloom into a caring and responsible person. Their relationship is so precious.
