PSC should sum­mon Prez: MPS

It is es­sen­tial to do so as he is the Min­is­ter of De­fence and Law and Or­der

There were sev­eral views ex­pressed in Par­lia­ment yes­ter­day with re­gard to the sum­mon­ing of the Pres­i­dent by the Par­lia­men­tary Se­lect Com­mit­tee (PSC) ap­pointed to in­quire into the Easter Sun­day at­tacks.

Sev­eral op­po­si­tion and govern­ment MPS stressed the need to sum­mon the Pres­i­dent be­fore the PSC on the ba­sis that he was the Min­is­ter of De­fence and Law and Or­der.

JVP leader Anura Ku­mara Dis­sanayake said the Pres­i­dent should be ques­tioned on the ba­sis that he was the head of the State and Min­is­ter of De­fence, Law and Or­der.

UNP MP Ashu Maras­inghe also un­der­scored the fact that it was vi­tal for the Pres­i­dent to be sum­moned be­fore the PSC.

UNP MP S.M. Marikkar said the work of the PSC would be nul­li­fied un­less the Pres­i­dent was ques­tioned with re­gard to the April 21 car­nage.

UPFA MP Dayasiri Jayasekara re­sponded say­ing there was no tra­di­tion to sum­mon a Pres­i­dent be­fore a com­mit­tee and even crit­i­cize a Pres­i­dent in Par­lia­ment.
