Lasting
“Love is a golden ring Not just the kiss that follows the dance…”
Went the popular song and Mumtaz hummed the tune as she listened to the radio.
She was in a romantic mood as she awoke to a New Day. She padded barefoot to the window and smiled at the sun.
“What does it matter that I celebrated my fiftieth birthday and that I am divorced with no children? I remember my first boyfriend and how we went to the movies cutting classes. He and I were too shy to kiss but we held hands and built memories. I can’t even remember his name now but it was a lasting romance.” She thought to herself.
Mumtaz now spent her time teaching in a pre-school and caring for her ageing mother. “I have responsibilities but that keeps me going. I love my mother and the little children keep me on my toes. I think that being with young minds helps to keep me young!” she said.
“Yes, being an Aunty is perhaps better than being a full-time biological mother with all the responsibilities for at least twenty years!” commented Hiran.
“You should know. You are a happy Uncle and your nephew and niece dote on you” commented Mumtaz.
“It is just that one has known love and it is lasting even if you don’t have a lover right now” said Hiran.
“You can live on memories and reach out to others, even perfect strangers, showing them love and kindness” summed up Mumtaz.
