- BY SHEAIN FERNANDOPULLE

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) conducted a raid on banned lunch sheet manufacturing industry at Hekitta Road, Wattala where it detected five tons of lunch sheets manufactured by using illegal materials worth Rs. 1 million, CEA Director of Investigation N. F. Gamage said.

He said the raid was jointly carried out by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and Police special Unit of the CEA on Wednesday.

“When the raid was conducted, the industry was in operation and lunch sheets were being manufactured using HDPE materials and calcium. The production stock was found stored inside a secret chamber of the production building,” Mr. Gamage said.

“Three extruder machines, three cutting machines and mixtures were being used for the production process. It has been revealed that this industry has been granted an Environmental Protection Licence only for manufacturing LDPE shopping bags and grocery bags,” he added. This industry has violated the National Environmental Act since it manufactures HDPE lunch sheets in contrary with Regulation No. 2034/34 of 2017. 09.01.

The CEA pursue legal action against the accused in the Wattala Magistrate’s Courts.
