PROTEST AGAINST HEALTH MINISTER

- BY PUSHPAKUMARA JAYARATNE

The members of the Mahasangha and residents staged a protest demonstration in front of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital on Monday against what they said undue interference in the ongoing inquiries into the allegations against Gynaecologist Dr Shafi Mohamed Shihabdeen.

More than 2000 people including several Buddhist monks and monks participated. Business establishments put up shutters during the protest. The protestors accused Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne of attempting to transfer the Kurunegala General Hospital Director, who was appointed in charge of the investigations against the Gynaecologist. The protestors said that the investigations should be free from political interference, or else they would resort to a massive campaign against the incident and the political interferences. The protestors displayed placards and banners criticizing the Minister of Health and the arrested doctor. The protests resulted in heavy traffic congestion in the town.
