- BY KRISHAN JEEWAKA JAYARUK

The special investigation unit of the Southern Province under the Senior DIG and all other special investigative units under his official name, had been dissolved with immediate effect, stated the new Senior DIG of Southern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces Roshan Fernando on Tuesday.

These units would be established only when a necessity arises and such units would function only under his direct supervision. Roshan Fernando said further that he maintained a special investigation unit to curb the activities of the AWA group in Jaffna and other than that he has no intention up to now in establishing such a unit in Southern or Sabaragamuwa Provinces. He said that all officers who were attached to the investigation units had been posted to police stations after the dissolution.

Meanwhile the OIC and fifteen police officers who were attached to the Special investigation unit of Southern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces that functioned under the former Senior DIG Ravi Wijewardene, are being held under remand custody until June 10th in connection with the double murder in Rathgama.
