Peradeniya Police arrest CID imposter

A man posing as a CID officer and robbed pedestrian­s of their cash and jewellery had been arrested during investigat­ions into a robbery that had taken place down Peradeniya Railway Station Road, the Peradeniya Police said.

The suspect, with another individual, had approached a young couple walking along the road and asked for their identity cards and when they were preparing to take out the identity cards the suspects had snatched the young woman’s gold chain and fled.

The Peradeniya Police initiated investigat­ions and arrested the main suspect, who was frequentin­g the town and recovered the gold chain.

They said the suspect, posing as a CID officer was involved in a series of burglaries and that the suspect had robbed University students and schoolchil­dren attending tuition classes.

OIC Peradeniya Police CI Mahinda Caldera is conducting investigat­ions.
