One person run over by train, another injured near Ambepussa

Two brothers consuming alcohol on rail track

Two brothers who were consuming liquor while squatting on the rail track in Ambepussa area were hit by the Badulla-bound express train from Colombo on Wednesday night killing one of them instantane­ously and injuring the other.

This was revealed at the coronary investigat­ion conducted by Coroner Chandrasir­i Marasinghe yesterday at the Wathupitiw­ala Base hospital. The deceased was identified as M. P. Samantha Pathmasiri (37), a father of two children and a resident of Bothale Pahalagama.

Sources revealed that on the 29th night, the duo were consuming liquor while squatting on the rail track. Suddenly the deceased, the eldest of the brothers, had heard the sound of the Night Mail train was approachin­g and both had jumped out of the rail track but he (the elder brother) was run over by the train and the younger escaped with only an injury to his hand.
