Japanese man nabbed with foreign currency at BIA

A 38-year-old Japanese man was arrested by the Customs at the Bandaranai­ke Internatio­nal Airport (BIA) for attempting to leave the country with foreign currency amounting to over Rs.8 million.

He was arrested when he tried to board a Sri Lankan flight to depart for Japan on Saturday.

Additional Director General of Customs Sunil Jayaratne said the suspect who works in a developmen­t project in Sri Lanka, had declared only US Dollars 1,000 on his departure.

The officers recovered Japanese Yen 5 million (Rs.8,130, 500) from the suspect’s luggage.
