We celebrate the International day for Biological Diversity on May 22 of each year. On this day, a wide range of activities are organized around the world to increase understanding of the important role the biodiversity in our future.

This year’s celebrations for biological diversity focus on biodiversity as the foundation for our food and as health and a key catalyst to transforming food systems and improving human health.

In the last 100 years, more than 90% of crop varieties have disappeared from farmers’ fields. Half of the breeds of many domestic animals have been lost, and the world’s main fishing resources shrunk. The International Day for Biological Diversity raises awareness about preserving endangered habitats.

Biodiversity is the most precious gift of nature the mankind is blessed with. As the organisms in the ecosystem are interlinked and interdependent, the value of Biodiversity in the life of all the organisms including human beings is enormous.

We are dependent on Biodiversity for our cultural, economic and environmental well-being. It is our moral responsibility to preserve the Earth’s incredible diversity for the next generation. D. WEERATUNGA
