Train-cab accident at Watareka level crossing

- BY BUDDHIKA KUMARASIRI

The train running from Kosgama to Maharagama rammed into a double cab at the Kalumutuketiya unprotected level crossing in Watareka. Meegoda Police said the train was approaching when the double cab entered the level crossing without noticing the oncoming train.

The double cab had been dragged on to a distance of about 20 metres before the train stopped. However, the driver managed to get off the double cab and run away.

Meanwhile, the residents of the area staged a protest compelling the authorities to install a gate to prevent the recurrence of accidents.

They pointed out that the gate and the casual gate man employed at the level crossing had been removed regardless of its danger. They said a large number of vehicles transporting schoolchildren used the level crossing in the morning and in the afternoon.
