SUSPECTS RE-REMANDED UNTIL JUNE 13

The suspects accused of desecratin­g the Buddha statues in Mawanella during the period between December 22 to 25 last year were re-remanded until June 13, by Magistrate Upul Rajakaruna yesterday .

Thirteen suspects had been produced before the Mawanella Magistrate Court earlier. When the hearing resumed yesterday another suspect was produced by the Mawanella Police. Police, when producing the suspect said that the suspect was produced in courts for transactin­g business at a private bank in Mawanella along with suspects Mohamed Ibrahim

Sahid Abdul Haq and Mohamed Sadik Abdulla the two brothers who had been living in the same house. A statement and reports obtained from the Bank were also submitted to courts by the Mawanella Police SI Ranasinghe.

The 14th suspect taken into custody by the Mawanella Police has been identified as Hisbulla Khan Hamid Ahmed a 24-yearold bachelor, resident in Aluthnuwar­a Hingula. The suspects were brought to courts from the remand prison in Kegalle under special police security.

The suspects identified were Mohamed Alufer and Mohamed Faizer from Delgahagod­a in Mawanella, Mohamed Akbar Mohamed of Hingula, Mohamed Sufias from Kehelwatte, Mohamed Aswer Atheek and Mohamed Kaleel from Mawanella, Najibudeen from Danagama in Mawanella, Mohamed Affardeen from Gelioya, Mohamed Musthafa from Polonnaruw­a, Rasheed and Mohamed Aslam Akil Ahmed from Danagama in Mawanella, Abdul Jabbar and a woman suspect Issadeen Siththi Nazeera from Nawalapiti­ya Road, Ulapane.

The suspects were brought to courts from the remand prison in Kegalle under special police security
