- BY SUMANASIRI GUNATILLEKA

The Asphalt and Crusher Plant Complex at Mahagodayaya in Buttala of the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau has been left to the mercy of the elements causing a colossal waste of public funds. It had manufactured asphalt mixture and concrete accessories for road development project until it was closed in the later part of 2014.

A former employee of the factory said more than 100 employees lost

their livelihood due to the the closure of the plant. He pointed out that the factory was located on a 20 acre land but now part of it had been encroached by unauthorized settlers despite security provided by a private security company.

A senior official of the CECB in Badulla, who refused to comment on the issue said the media was at liberty to report the facts they gathered.

However, a Pradeshiya Sabha Member Sunil Arangala said the plant had been functioning quite well with a workforce of more than 100 employees during the previous government but it was closed after the change of government. He expressed concern about the waste of public property in this manner.
