- BY LAHIRU POTHMULLA

The time has come to dissolve parliament and then go for a general election to resolve the crisis the country is engulfed in today, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said yesterday. Addressing a news briefing, SLPP Chairman Professor G.L. Peiris requested President Maithripala Sirisena to dissolve parliament after obtaining the required two thirds majority in Parliament.

“There is no stability in the country. All Muslim ministers resigned when charges were levelled against one minister. They say their decision on backing the government will depend on their satisfaction on the investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks. If the Muslim MPS are not satisfied, they would leave the government. Meanwhile, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is demanding that the government should bring in the new Constitution and the

Act. The ‘minority’ government is trotting on now,” he said.

He said the internal wars of the government are brought out into the open today and the people are disenchanted with it. “People yearn for a fresh government and a new beginning,” Professor Peiris said.

He said the Elections Commission has assured that the Presidential Election would be held at the end of the year. “Even amidst many failed attempts to postpone presidential elections, it is finally being held. However, a general election could be held before the presidential election if parliament is dissolved,” he said.
