Met. Dept. calls upon pub­lic to name storms

De­part­ment of Me­te­o­rol­ogy has called for pub­lic sugges­tions to name storms in the North­ern In­dian Ocean.

It said the at­ten­tion should be drawn to the fol­low­ing cri­te­ria when propos­ing a name.

1. The pro­pos­als should not tar­get any po­lit­i­cal char­ac­ters, re­li­gions or cul­ture.

2. It should not be gen­der-based.

3. Should not harm eth­nic sen­ti­ments.

4. Should not be harsh.

5.The word should be eas­ily pro­nounced and lim­ited to eight words in English.

The pro­posed names may be sent to Direc­tor Gen­eral, De­part­ment of Me­te­o­rol­ogy Baud­dhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07, be­fore June 15.
