Foeti­cide re­ported in De­hi­wala

A seven- month- old foe­tus was re­cov­ered last morn­ing from waste water canal at Ned­i­mala in De­hi­wala by the Mount Lavinia Po­lice.

A group of san­i­tary work­ers of the Mu­nic­i­pal Coun­cil who no­ticed the em­bryo float­ing in the canal had in­formed po­lice. Mount Lavinia Actg. Mag­is­trate Kr­is­han­tha Dhamatille­ka who vis­ited the scene held the pre­lim­i­nary Mag­is­te­rial in­quiry and or­dered the po­lice to re­fer the foe­tus to the JMO, Colombo South Teach­ing Hospi­tal for an au­topsy to con­duct fur­ther in­ves­ti­ga­tions.

A se­nior po­lice of­fi­cial said the foe­tus might have been thrown into the canal by a wo­man or an in­di­vid­ual from an il­le­gal abor­tion cen­tre in the early hours of last morn­ing.
