Team of med­i­cal ex­perts to ex­am­ine women ac­cusers

A com­mit­tee com­pris­ing med­i­cal ex­perts led by the Colombo Chief Ju­di­cial Med­i­cal Of­fi­cer will ex­am­ine the women who lodged com­plaints against Dr. Mo­hamed Shafi stat­ing that he had ster­ilised them, Po­lice Spokesman SP Ruwan Gu­nasekara said yes­ter­day.

SP Gu­nasekara said the Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tions De­part­ment (CID) has recorded state­ments from 421 fe­males and 26 doc­tors over the illegal ster­il­iza­tions al­legedly car­ried out by Dr. Mo­hamed Shafi.

The Po­lice Spokesman said the CID had also recorded state­ments from 69 nurses and 18 other hospi­tal staff in the course of their in­ves­ti­ga­tion. He said the case would be taken in the Ku­rune­gala Mag­is­trate’s Court on June 27.

The CID will sub­mit a com­pre­hen­sive re­port to court on that day, he said.
