Cardboard Sandos and pseudo patriots

- RUSSELL CC NUGEGODA

Last week’s Verite Research-run Factcheck platform published in the Daily Mirror gave the lie to the statement made by Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne that ‘Within the world healthcare system, the fact that the best health service is provided by Cuba and Sri Lanka has been accepted by the World Health Organization (Who)’.verite Research said that to check this claim it had consulted the WHO’S Tracking Universal Health Coverage: 2017 Global Monitoring Report, which provides an index that compares countries on the extent of their Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Dr. Senaratne himself showed what he said was untrue because if according to what he says our Healthcare System has made the grade why then did he fly to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on February 19, 2016 to undergo surgery to clear two blocked valves in his heart? He should have instead undergone the surgery at the Colombo National Hospital or at some other hospital in Sri Lanka where more than hundreds of by-pass surgeries are performed annually. The fact that he did not do so proves that the Health Minister himself lacked faith in Sri Lanka’s Healthcare System.

Whatever that maybe, we have a breed of politicians and government officials, who will vouch for the quality of our State healthcare services.they are the pseudo-patriotic politicians known to shout themselves hoarse inside and outside Parliament at the drop of a coin no sooner are placed under remand custody or sentenced to prison scramble over each other to have them admitted to the prison hospital where they stay put till the end of their stays as guests of the State. S.B. Dissanayake is one of them. He was found guilty of contempt of Court and sentenced to jail some years ago, but did not waste time to creep into hospital and stay put during his entire term.another was Ven. Gnanasara Thera, sentenced to jail on similar charges. He too got himself admitted to hospital.

Former Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita, SLPP strongman Basil Rajapaksa with one foot in the US, MP Wimal Weerawansa of the ‘farce unto death’ fame, former minister Sarana Gunawardena among several others, all visibly bubbling with health up to the time they are remanded or sentenced end up week-kneed cardboard Sandos who waste no time in shamelessly seeking refuge at the prison hospital maintained by the tax payer. For these vociferous politicos it is definitely a home away from home. Watch out for them during voting time.
