Tree planting programme inaugurated

UDA made a request to the Treasury to release funds to launch the garbage dump rehabilitation project, since obtaining foreign funds could be time consuming

Daily Mirror (Sri Lanka) - - METRO -

Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka inaugurated the tree planting programme of the Meethotamulla Urban Park which is being built on top of the Meethotamulla garbage mountain.

Speaking at the event, Minister Ranawaka said the Urban Development Authority (UDA) made a request to the Treasury to release funds to launch the garbage dump rehabilitation project, since obtaining foreign funds could be time consuming.

“However, we still didn’t get any funds from the Treasury. Therefore, the UDA took charge of the project and decided to invest in it. This is a land which belongs to the UDA. Had we developed this and sold it, we could have obtained 2,000 - 3,000 millions of rupees. The Colombo Municipal Council and others destroyed this land by dumping garbage here. They didn’t pay a single penny to the UDA,” he said.

He said millions of rupees were earlier spent to manage the garbage mountain but it had not been managed at all. “This was evident when the garbage mountain collapsed. The report of the committee of retired Judge Chandradasa Nanayakkara clearly shows who pick-pocketed those money. People have been killed, a report has been released but no action had been taken against anyone. We should be ashamed of this,” he said.
