Climate activist Thunberg wins Amnesty’s top human rights award

-

LONDON(DPA)- Amnesty International is giving its annual Ambassador of Conscience award to Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg and her protest movement, citing their “unique leadership and courage in standing up for human rights.”

Thunberg said it was “a huge honour” to receive the prize on behalf of the movement, known for staging global school strikes to demand action on climate change under the “Fridays For Future” slogan.

“Human rights and the climate crisis go hand in hand. We can’t solve one without solving the other,”thunberg said in a statement via Amnesty on Friday.

No date has been set for the award ceremony, Amnesty said.

“We are humbled and inspired by the determination with which youth activists across the world are challenging us all to confront the realities of the climate crisis,” Kumi Naidoo, Amnesty International’s secretary general, said in a statement.

“Every young person taking part in Fridays for Future embodies what it means to act on your conscience,” he added.
