Awareness programme on illegal fishing activities for fisheries community

An awareness programme on illegal fishing activities organized by the Sri Lanka Navy for the fisheries community was held in the territoria­l area of Southern Naval Command on June 7.

An awareness programme intended for educating the fisher folk about the disadvanta­ges caused to the ocean and coastal belt by illegal fishing measures, is being conducted by the Navy under the directives and supervisio­n of the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva.

As a part of this programme, awareness sessions in Southern Naval Command have been planned to be conducted within two weeks, under the guidance of Commander Southern Naval Area Rear Admiral Kassapa Paul. During this programme fishing community is made aware of the Fisheries law, Gazettes/ Acts/ Ordinances related to fishing, Illegal fishing measures, Miscellane­ous illegal activities and punishment­s and rules related to use of explosive for fishing. Further, it is expected to aware the fishermen about the precaution­ary actions taken by the SL Navy to avert the illegal fishing activities. Accordingl­y, awareness programmes were held at Dodanduwa Fisheries harbour premises, at Divisional Secretaria­t-weligama and at Galle Fisheries harbour premises.

These programmes are resourced by the Public Relation Officers of SLNS Dakshina, SLNS Nipuna and the Fisheries Inspectors in the region.
