PREZ TO SHIRK RESPONSIBILITY BY ABOLISHING PSC

PREVENTING PEOPLE FROM RECEIVING INFORMATION ON THE MATTER IS A SERIOUS VIOLATION OF THEIR RIGHT TO INFORMATION

Instead of admitting his shortcomings and correcting them, President Maithripala Sirisena is attempting to stop information on the Easter Sunday attacks from being revealed by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) by abolishing it, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said yesterday.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a news conference that people had a right to know who was responsible for the breach of national security.

“Preventing the people of this country from receiving information on the matter is a serious violation of their right to information. President Sirisena is trying to abolish the PSC appointed to probe the Easter Sunday attacks. What he should be doing is admitting his shortcomings and correcting them.the Mahinda Rajapaksa faction is also supporting the President’s move by not attending the PSC.

“From information revealed by the PSC, it is evident that President Sirisena had not carried out his responsibility on behalf of the people. He had not convened the National Security Council (NSC) properly and relevant people such as the Prime Minister and the IGP have not been called for its meetings. He has used the NSC for his petty political ends and to take political vengeance at the cost of national security.

“The government failed in fulfilling its promises for the last four years including implementing laws against fraudsters, abolishing the executive presidency and alleviating the debt burden. It also failed to ensure the security of the people. Letting it continue for another year is dangerous. The country has led to anarchy due to the rift between the President and the Prime Minister. This leaves national security in the lurch,” he said.
