Sri Lanka’s women’s tennis team left on Sunday for Tajikistan to participate in the Fed Cup tournament held by the International Tennis Federation.

The Sri Lanka team comprises Anjalika Kurera, Savini Jayasuriya, Rukshika Wijesooriya, Janali Manamperi and Oneli Perera with Guyanga Weerasekera as the non-playing captain. They will be playing against Tajikistan, Chinese Taipei, Iran, Philippines and Singapore to decide on which country will get promotion to the Asia/oceania Group 1 level. The matches will be played on a round robin basis from June 12-15 in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan.

The players got entry into the team following a tiered trials process in which there were trials for both the singles and doubles places. A pool of players were invited to

participate in the trials and the selections were made out of those who participated. The Fed Cup is the world’s largest annual women’s international team sports competition in terms of the number of nations that compete. The men’s equivalent of the Fed Cup is the Davis Cup.
