SECURITY IN ANURADHAPU­RA BEEFED UP DURING POSON FESTIVAL

Police have taken steps to enhance security in the Anuradhapu­ra District during the Poson festival on June 15, 16, and 17. DIG North Central Province Prathap Senerath Sandungaha­watta told the media that 8,000 police and security force personnel would be deployed to provide protection to the large crowds expected to arrive in Anuradhapu­ra,mihintale and Thanthirim­ale sacred cities.

He said 4,000 police personnel, 2,000 security force personnel, and 2,000 Civil Security Department personnel, most of them in civvies, would be deployed.

He said the police would

check all vehicles entering the area at the barriers, but causing minimum delay to the pilgrims. The DIG stressed that the pilgrims could attend religious activities in Anuradhapu­ra, Mihintale and Thantirima­le sacred cities without any

obstructio­n and that they should rely on security arrangemen­ts with confidence. He said the police personnel in civvies would mingle with the crowd and be vigilant on suspicious individual­s round the clock.
