Colombo Stock Exchange supports Helpage’s free eye care programme

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in collaborat­ion with Helpage Sri Lanka (HASL) conducted a Mobile Medical and Eye Care Camp at Sri Punyaloka Temple at Watareka, Padukka for the benefit of 145 less-privileged senior citizens over 55 years.

The CSE is one of the major stock exchanges in South Asia that provides an electronic trading platform extended this facility through their CSR initiative. The objective of CSE and Helpage were to restore the vision of underprivi­leged elderly citizens in the country.

Accordingl­y, 67 persons received medical screenings while 78 elders received eye screenings at the camp. In addition, elders who were suffering from refractive error also received 58 bifocal spectacles. Nine elders were also referred to Helpage Eye Hospital, Wellawatta (opposite Savoy Cinema) for free cataract surgeries.

Colombo Stock Exchange CEO Rajeeva Bandaranai­ke highly admired Helpage for conducting free cataract surgeries for underprivi­leged elderly citizens and said the CSE has always been helping needy citizens to improve their health conditions as well as social activities.

Helpage Sri Lanka is a notfor-profit charitable organisati­on which provides social and medical services, especially for destitute Sri Lankan elders who has low vision issues.

Helpage Executive Director Samantha Liyanawadu­ge paid a glowing tribute to CSE for making this valuable support to improve the living standards of a needy section in our society.

He further said Helpage Eye Hospital at Wellawatta conducts around 25 free cataract surgeries everyday and there is a marked improvemen­t in donations made by people and institutio­ns towards this free cataract surgery programme.

Executive Director Liyanawadu­ge also said the Mobile Medical and the Eye Care programme has been conducting by Helpage free of charge during the past 35 years and any persons over 55 years could have this facility at this hospital free of charge.
