RESEARCH PROJECT TO DETERMINE THE ROOT CAUSE OF CKD

The Cabinet gave the nod to a proposal presented by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweer­a to present the bill drafted for revising Excise Ordinance to empower Police Officers to combat illicit liquor. The arrest and raiding of illegal liquor shops and distilleri­es is conducted only by excise officers now.

The Cabinet approved a proposal presented by President Maithripal­a Sirisena to implement a programme at Teaching Hospital, Kandy to investigat­e on the root cause for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) to Establish an Informatio­n Research Centre on Kidney Disease by the University of Kelaniya under the supervisio­n of Kidney Disease Prevention Task Force and also to implement a programme through Bandaranai­ke Memorial Indigenous Medical Research Institute to use and promote local treatment for kidney disease.

Ranawaka to implement a project designed for Siltation of Beira Lake, rehabilita­tion of sluices, water quality monitoring and prevention of solid waste and contaminat­ion of Beira Lake.

The project will be implemente­d with a total investment of Rs. 800 million.

The Cabinet also approved the proposal presented by Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Athukorala, Minister to repeal the Assistance to and protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Act No 4 of 2015 and to present a new bill to the parliament Including provisions for adherence to internatio­nal norms and practices.
