Why space matters

- By Kamanthi Wickramasinghe

We often buy a spacious house because we link our freedom with space. But in most instances we are left with limited options when buying apartments, sometimes not even having a parking space! In the 21st Century, as youth have moved towards appreciating space, they look for apartments with less furniture and more space, contrary to lifestyles of yesteryear.

A space could most often be the living room or your own bedroom but with financial constraints, families may opt to single bedroom or two bed room houses. Therefore your privacy may be threatened. In recent decades, by contrast, everyone has got a lot less space. We have had relatively little new building, but somehow we have magically created lots of new housing.

A really remarkable part of the increase in the dwelling stock has come not from building but rather from breaking up existing homes into more “dwellings”. Essentially, so far, the housing crisis has been solved by subdividing our homes to make way for the extra population growth. Meanwhile, what new homes we do build are the smallest in the developed world.

People are squeezing into every available space, like relatives visiting at Christmas.

But on the other hand bigger houses may also mean more efforts on maintenance, extra acres of land and high cost of energy consumption. And contrary to age old beliefs, researchers suggest that when people have big homes they have a tendency to yearn for more. Therefore it is not really about the size of the space but how you utilize it that matters the most.
