Ban strikes and work stoppages for one year

- D.WEERATUNGA NUGEGODA

We have seen very unreasonable strikes organised by some trade unions recently. They strike without giving any warning. People face serious difficulties due to these strikes. Millions and millions of public funds are wasted because of these strikes. The economy of the country is going from bad to worse. There are frequent train strikes.tourists are greatly inconvenienced by these train strikes. We are trying to improve tourism. But these train strikes would discourage tourists.

The employees who organise these strikes are very unfairly treated. Compare their salaries with that of doctors.the latter’s salaries are very high.their leave allocations are very good.they get very good pensions. Some doctors earn large amounts of money by doing private practice. Some of these employees are provided with government quarters, railway warrants, official vehicles and foreign trips.they also enjoy very high allowances and very good welfare facilities. The training they receive is given to them in Sri lanka and sometimes overseas.these perks are all arranged by the Government.

It will take at least one year for the country to return to normalcy. During this period the Government should stop all strikes and all demonstrations

Look at the situation the country is in.there are security threats.the economy is weak.there is a very serious debt crisis.the tourism industry has collapsed. Thousands and thousands of employees have lost their jobs. Political stability is absent. Most of the businesses and industries are in trouble.thousands of people are suffering as a result of the drought.there is a big problem to rehabilitate the families affected by the Easter Sunday carnage. Musicians and artistes are in trouble due to cancellation of musical shows and other similar events. The Government is very weak due to political instability.

It will take at least one year for the country to return to normalcy. During this period the Government should stop all strikes and all demonstrations which would inconvenience general public. During this period all of us should work to improve or develop the country. All university students should do their studies. They must not waste public funds by arranging protest marches, strikes, and various other unnecessary meetings.the Government should stop all foreign visits. Unnecessary ceremonies and functions must be stopped. Only the development work must be done.

To achieve all this we do not need the advice of any foreign experts. Nor do we need any additional funds.we need not obtain foreign loans. We need not import brand new vehicles.

What is necessary is to love the motherland. Unless we make these small sacrifices this country would never be developed. We need the political will, the courage and the determination to achieve this task.
