FOOD ITEMS WORTH RS. 1.2 MILLION SEIZED

Unhygienic food sold by restaurant­s and traders

Astock of food items worth over Rs.1.2 million was seized from restaurant­s in Gampola town limits in the Kandy District and arrangemen­ts made to file action against 60 traders who sold unhygenic food which is unfit for human consumptio­n. A programme has been planned on security of food and healthines­s which

will cover the entire country. The raid has been conducted by 60 officers of Kandy District Health Administra­tion Division including the Health Division of Gampola Urban Council.

150 stalls were searched in Gampola Town under the leadership of food and drugs Controller R.P.W. Rajapaksa, Kandy District Administra­tive Public Health Inspector Kingsley Handunsoor­iya together with Public Health Inspector Ruwan Sumanaseke­ra, Chief Health Officer of Gampola Public Health Sector on the instructio­ns of the Chairman of Health Committee Sameera Chandrasir­i, Secretary Indika Dissanayak­a and Chairman of Gampola Urban Council Samantha Aruna Kumara.

It was revealed at the time of the raid that the hotels and bakeries were selling the expired date food which was stored in deepfreeze­s for too long.

Cases were also filed against traders who are selling vegetables displayed on the ground and those who were obstructin­g the pavement.

Nine barrels of coconut oil were seized during a raid on a large scale store which was selling coconut oil stored in used chemical barrels.

Cases were filed against places selling fruit drinks and watermelon mixed with colouring during the raids on cool spots.
