FOOD ITEMS WORTH RS. 1.2 MILLION SEIZED
Unhygienic food sold by restaurants and traders
Astock of food items worth over Rs.1.2 million was seized from restaurants in Gampola town limits in the Kandy District and arrangements made to file action against 60 traders who sold unhygenic food which is unfit for human consumption. A programme has been planned on security of food and healthiness which
will cover the entire country. The raid has been conducted by 60 officers of Kandy District Health Administration Division including the Health Division of Gampola Urban Council.
150 stalls were searched in Gampola Town under the leadership of food and drugs Controller R.P.W. Rajapaksa, Kandy District Administrative Public Health Inspector Kingsley Handunsooriya together with Public Health Inspector Ruwan Sumanasekera, Chief Health Officer of Gampola Public Health Sector on the instructions of the Chairman of Health Committee Sameera Chandrasiri, Secretary Indika Dissanayaka and Chairman of Gampola Urban Council Samantha Aruna Kumara.
It was revealed at the time of the raid that the hotels and bakeries were selling the expired date food which was stored in deepfreezes for too long.
Cases were also filed against traders who are selling vegetables displayed on the ground and those who were obstructing the pavement.
Nine barrels of coconut oil were seized during a raid on a large scale store which was selling coconut oil stored in used chemical barrels.
Cases were filed against places selling fruit drinks and watermelon mixed with colouring during the raids on cool spots.
