SINGLE PARTY CANNOT WIN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

While stressing that anyone having an understanding of the current political trends would accept that it is difficult to win a presidential election as a single party, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday a UNP led Democratic National Front (DNF) will be formed before the end of this month.

Making a special statement, he said he devoted his time and worked hard to form a broad alliance that could propel the party to a victorious path. He said he, along with the leaders of other parties to be allied with the UNP, had not deviated from this objective.

“Our firm determination is to ensure victory for the Unpled alliance at the presidential election. Afterwards, we intend to win the parliamentary elections to form a strong government,” he said

Commenting on the formation of the Democratic National Front (DNF), he said there were fresh ideas that emerged at the last round of talks conducted after the date was fixed for signing the agreement. He said he realized the importance of incorporating these ideas. “We have decided to form the DNF before the end of August,” he said.

DNF will comprise a large number of political parties and other organizations. However, no political party in the alliance will be affected.
