Amara Ranathunga 80th birth anniversary

The 80th birth anniversary of veteran songstress Prof. Amara Ranathunga falls on August 22.

Amara Ranathunga, the wife of veteran singer and musician Dr. Dayarathna Ranathunga was the first Professor of Music in Sri Lanka.

She entered the Bhathkande Musc Institute in India in 1961 and later became the first Sri Lankan Professor in Hindustani classical music in the University of Visual and performing arts.

She was a lecturer at the University of Aesthetic Art and also a visiting lecturer in music at the University of Kelaniya.

Prof. Amara Ranatunga began her career as a schoolteacher. Later she served as a senior lecturer and Dean at the Faculty of Music of the Institute of Aesthetics at the Kelaniya University.
