Road named after former Army Commander Hamilton Wanasinghe

State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewarden­e said former Commander of the Army Hamilton Wanasinghe, served the country as brave soldier and also as a brave commander of the army. All were proud of his contributi­on to national security.

The minister hailed the service of the former army commander at a ceremony held on Saturday in Malwana to mark the naming of a road after him. The road “General Hamilton Wanasinghe Mawatha” was opened to the public. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesi­nghe had made allocation­s for the developmen­t of this road.

The present Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra de Silva unveiled the plaque of the new road.

The Minister also recalled the great service of the former Army Commander in regaining the entire eastern province from the LTTE terrorists and the rescuing of soldiers during the Poonaryn battle.

He thanked the Prime Minister for releasing funds for the developmen­t of the road and UNP MP Harshana Rajakaruna for inviting him.

“People in both Dompe and Biyagama wanted this road developed. It has been realized today. It is an important day for the Wanasinghe family because the road is named after him. I am happy to attend this event as the State Minister of Defence. The former Army Commander did yeoman service for the country. When he was in service, he was able to rescue the entire eastern province from the LTTE. Because of this, the government was able to conduct elections in the east,” Minister Wijewarden­e said.

Ven. Wennawatth­e Rathanajot­hi Thera of Dekatana Namaluwa appreciate­d the naming of the road after the former army commander in his “Anusasana” delivered at the event.

MP Rajakaruna said the former army commander had the privilege of serving the country as a hero in his capacity of army commander, commander of all the three forces and also as the defence secretary. He also mentioned that three members of the Wanasinghe Family - Brigadier Bathiya Wanasinghe, Captain Nalin Jayathilak­a and Major Panduka Wanasinghe had sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country.
