NILWALA RIVER OVER-FLOWING

Fover lood waters are fast spreading

the low-lying areas from last morning in the Nilwala valley due to the overflowin­g of the river as a result of continuous torrential rains, Matara District Disaster Management Centre Assistant Director Major Prabath Kalubowila said.

Ak ur essa-Si ya mb ala god a,Ak ur essak am bur up i ti ya and Ak ur essa-Mara god a and several other roads have gone underwater causing obstructio­n to transport while most of the low-lying areas in the district remains submerged. Meanwhile, communicat­ion services and supply of electricit­y have also been affected due to falling of huge trees during rains. He said flood has started from Kadduwa and Panadugama areas.

Widening of the river mouth in Matara -Fort area is being considered to minimize the flood damages. Residents on banks of the river has been cautioned by the Disaster Management Centre. Army, Navy and Police personnel has been stationed in areas most vulnerable for floods.

DMC director also said that all the arrangemen­ts have been made to face any emergency situation.

Meanwhile, several areas in the Galle District has also been affected by the flood caused due to prevailing heavy rains.

Ahangama Town, Galle- Matara main road and Ahangama- Imaduwa Road has been inundated due to the floods.

Houses and shops are about one foot underwater in Ahangama Town and in the common market area obstructin­g the transport services.

People in the area blame Road Developmen­t Authority for the improper drainage system which causes frequent floods in the town.
