Teejay wins first ‘Best Exporter Award –Textile Sector’

Teejay Lanka PLC, Sri Lanka’s only multinatio­nal textile manufactur­er, was adjudged the Best Textile Exporter in Sri Lanka at the 2019 Presidenti­al Export Awards presented by the Export Developmen­t Board (EDB).

The‘best Exporter Award – Textile Sector’ presented to the company at the 23rdeditio­n of this awards programme, marked Teejay Lanka’s debut at this event.

The award was presented to Teejay Lanka Deputy CEO Pubudu De Silva and the company’s General Manager EU Brands, Corporate Communicat­ion & CSR Samadhi Weerakoon by Indira Malwatte, Chairperso­n & Chief Executive of the EDB and Justice D. J. De S. Balapatabe­ndi at the BMICH.

“We are delighted to win this accolade especially because it comes at a time when the Company has been investing significan­tly in expansion of capacity and upgrading of technology and processes,” Teejay Lanka CEO Shrihan Perera said.

“We expect these developmen­ts to enable us to venture into new export markets in the years ahead, while consolidat­ing our engagement­swith domestic customers.”

Teejay Lanka PLC reported total revenue of US$ 108 million for 2018-19, of which 77 percent was generated by sales to Sri Lankan customers including Brandix, MAS and Omegaline, and 23 per cent was generated by exports to customers in Bangladesh, Kenya, Italy, India, and Vietnam.

The company has been steadily increasing its direct exports with a year-on-year growth of 177 percent in 2017-18, and 28 percentin 2018-19.

The Presidenti­al Export Awards initiated by the EDB in 1981are the highest recognitio­nof exporters in Sri Lanka for outstandin­g contributi­ons to the national economy.

With manufactur­ing operations in Sri Lanka and India, Teejay is one of the region’s largest textile manufactur­ers, and supplies fabric to some of the best internatio­nal brands across the world. Teejay Lanka PLC is a public quoted company with 39 per cent public ownership.
