Differentl­y-abled war heroes call off fast after MR pledge

The Sathyagrah­a and fast- unto- death campaign launched by the differentl­y –abled war heroes of the National Force for the Protection of the Rights of War Heroes opposite the Fort Railway Station was called off after a pledge given by Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.

They decided to call off this fast when several pledges including a lifetime pension scheme equal to the salary were promised by Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa. He promised to fulfil these promises under a future government.

The disabled soldiers and wives of those who sacrificed their lives were engaged in a Sathyagrah­a campaign for 20 days opposite Fort Railway Station and four of them engaged in a fast unto death since last Tuesday as their demand was not fulfilled.

Meanwhile the Opposition leader who came to the scene where the Sathyagrah­a was held at about 1.00 p.m yesterday and promised to the war heroes and their wives to call off it as he is going to fulfil their demands under his government that will be establishe­d in future.
