Let us help our disabled war heroes

-

These days there is a lot of media attention on the protest by the disabled soldiers held opposite the Fort Railway Station demanding they be paid salaries even after they reached their retirement age.

Yes, the Government certainly should address the predicament of those protesting as early as possible in an affirmative manner.

But, at the same time I suggest, we the people of this country (22 million in number) should also explore ways and means to help these war heroes in whatever way we can.

I propose that a fund be set up by a group of eminent and respected persons or by a reputed company or group of companies for this purpose. For example, if each citizen contributed just one rupee towards this fund, there will be LKR 22 Million! And this practice can be carried forward on a monthly basis.

Of course, with all the corruption taking place in the country it will be prudent to have effective checks and balances in place to ensure whatever money collected is distributed honestly, efficiently and effectively in a truly transparent way to our disabled heroes.
