National People’s Power (NPP) presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake said last Tuesday a government under his leadership would not only stop the plundering of public money but also take measures to recover funds looted by politicians.

Addressing the inaugural rally organised by NPP in Thambuttegama, he said a two-month amnesty period would be granted to politicians to handover assets amassed by selling public property.

“Looting public property should be stopped for national development. Who can do that? Let us govern the country only once. We will stop looting of public money and minimise the

waste of money by rulers,” he said. On a different note, he said apt steps would be taken to curtail the maintenance cost of the President.

“President’s houses are maintained in every part of the country at an exorbitant cost. We will turn them into cultural or tourist centres which will generate income. We will cut down on presidential staff by 90 per cent. State institutions will be reorganised under our rule as most of the national institutions have run into losses due to political appointments of the rulers’ kith and kin. Priority will be given to address abject poverty. A market-oriented agriculture policy will be introduced. We will initiate a programme to distribute seeds at concessionary rates,” he said.
