We have to strengthen the media rights further. We have proved that media which opposes us does not end up in the crematory today

New Democratic Front Candidate Sajith Premadasa yesterday pledged to carry out political reform process and to create a nation where people will also enjoy economic freedom, if he is elected to office next month. Mr. Premadasa made this pledge at a meeting organised by Civil Society and Trade Union Collective in Colombo yesterday.

“We have to strengthen the media rights further. We have proved that media which opposes us does not end up in the crematory today. We have to strengthen the rights which we have already won.

We have to carry forward the reform process which we started in the past. It is essential to safeguard people’s sovereignty and rights further. I will make one pledge to create a prosperous nation where people will also have economic freedom,” Mr. Premadasa said. “We have given media the freedom to criticize any Minister today. We all remember what happened to Uplai Thennekoon and Lasantha Wickramatunga after they exposed the truth. We all remember what happened to Keith Noyhar and Eknaligoda. We want to tell the people of this country not to forget Lasantha when you make the important decision on November 17. There is freedom today,” he added. “However we will not deny that there are shortcomings. We ask for a fresh mandate to take the next leap in ensuring democracy. We will take into consideration what the nation really needs when we go on this journey to achieve complete freedom. We will take into consideration of civil rights of entire Sri Lankan population,” he also said.
