Gateway celebrates Children’s day with Robotics and STEAM activity day

Among the most recognised names in private education in Sri Lanka, Gateway has a long heritage of energizing, enlighteni­ng and empowering children for the challenges that lay before them. Gateway Group was founded to prepare its students intellectu­ally, emotionall­y and spirituall­y to become upstanding citizens.

The STEAM Activity day and Robotics Competitio­n organized in collaborat­ion with Hilton Colombo Kids Club, to commemorat­e Children’s Day, served as an exploratio­n platform to over 300 children, as they eagerly engaged in many fun activities which triggered their curiosity, creativity and innovative thinking capabiliti­es.

Activities in Drama, Dance, Story Telling, Arts & Crafts, Robotics and STEM, introduced the challengin­g subjects of Science, Technology, Engineerin­g, Art and Mathematic­s, through fun activities in a manner that children could easily grasp and truly enjoy.

The Robotics Competitio­n conducted by Gateway School of Computing in collaborat­ion with My STEM Labs India, had an eager participat­ion from many schools in the Island.

The competitio­n was organized to promote Robotics and STEM education in the country, in an interactiv­e competitiv­e platform, by providing students with hands-on experience to design and build programmab­le robots that can complete an assigned task.

Gateway College Kandy, won the Championsh­ip in the Senior category and Gateway College Negombo were the Champions of the Junior Category. Yoshida Shokanji Internatio­nal School and Vidura College emerged the 1st Runner up and 2nd Runner up respective­ly in the Senior Category. The 1st Runner up in the Junior category was Alethea Internatio­nal School and another team from Gateway College Negombo were placed 2nd runner up, in the Junior Category.

Hilton Awards for the most innovative robot designs of the Senior and Junior categories were awarded to Gateway College Kandy and Gateway College Negombo respective­ly.

Many forward thinking organizati­ons that strive to ignite the innovative skills of the children in Sri Lanka supported this initiative.

Hilton Colombo hosted the event as the main sponsor. DFCC Bank and DSI Samson Group co-sponsored the programme. Gifts were provided by LEGO, Uswatte Confection­ery Works (Pvt) Ltd, Ceylon Biscuits Limited, Maliban Milk Products (Pvt) Ltd and Hameedias.

The event was put together by the collective effort of Gateway Centres, located across the island, that offer a broad range of enriching programmes for young learners, teenagers, school leavers and profession­als, in all areas of STEAM education.
