Melstacorp refurbishes Child Development Centres in Passara, Badulla
Melstacorp PLC, a diversified conglomerate based in Sri Lanka, in their CSR initiatives to uplift communal facilities, have refurbished the Child Development Centres (Crèches) of Passara and Badulla areas.
The project was launched by the Melstacorp with the objective of giving back to the needy estate communities, most of whom are daily wage earning plantation workers.
Currently, the programme has flourished into about seven estates in Badulla district (Ury estate, Telbedda estate, Cullen estate, Glen Alpine estate, Spring Valley estate, Wewessa estate, and Gowerakele estate) where at least three to four crèches have been fully refurbished.
These facilities were pivotal for the estate community since; previously the toddlers and the young children of the plantation community were placed mostly in underprivileged care, where their recreational needs and general healthcare were not met.
Thanks to these crèches, now the estate workers can labour, unburdened by the issue of childcare.
The daily operations of new child development centres are managed by qualified staff and these centres provide safe daycare facilities for different age groups. The units are equipped with classrooms, play areas, other recreational activities and even crib facilities. The nutritional needs of the estate children are also met accordingly by these centres. Due to this initiative, the working mothers have been put at ease about the safety and well-being of their children while the mothers are at work.
Similar facilities have been installed by the Melstacorp in 12 estates in Madulsima, and the installation work is in progress in Balangoda region where, eight more estates managed by Balangoda Plantations PLC.
The objective of the Melstacorp is to create an increasingly inclusive environment, where business choices and decisions are made befitting the actual community, where the businesses are situated.
