Champions presented with old trophy

-

S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia retained the Allisland National School Games Under-20 Twenty20 Cricket title when they defeated Trinity College by eight runs in the final played at Randles Hill Grounds in Kandy yesterday.

However, due to the inclement weather the match was reduced to 10-over contest.

The Thomians taking first lease of the wicket scored 99 for six with Maneesha Rupasinghe making a top score of 39.

Trinity in reply, lost wickets at regular intervals and were restricted to 91 for eight with Kalana Perera ending with figures of two for 15.

A total of 18 teams, selected on the basis of being the top teams from each province participated in this three-day tournament.

However, the presentation ceremony ended in a sour note as the champions were presented with an old trophy which had been hurriedly brought from the cupboard of Dharmaraja College.

“It’s ridiculous as we have come all the way from Colombo by spending our own money inclusive of accommodation and various other expenses involved with it,” said the dejected Coach of S. Thomas’, Dinesh Kumarasinghe.

The champion Thomian Team comprised of Sithara Hap uh inn a, Kala na Perera, Thevin Eriyagama, Umayanga Suwaris, Maneesha Rupasinghe, Yohan Perera, Ryan Fernando, Gavin Boteju, Deon Fernando, Shamilka Wickramatileke and Anuk Palihawadana.
