Presidential candidate Prof.rajiva clarifies his manifesto
Professor Rajiva Wijesinha , a presidential candidate stressed the need for better training and monitoring of judicial personnel, to ensure the effectiveness of Directive Principles of the Constitution, during a meeting held recently.
He said so addressing the Human Rights Seminar to commemorate Bishop Lakshman Wickremasinghe. He began his speech by circulating copies of his election manifesto for reforms in key areas of the present Constitution in respect of “A Rights Based Constitution”.
The Police Commission should provide for the training and the improvement of the efficiency and independence of the police service and in particular its adherence to the requirements of the Human Rights provisions of the Constitution
He said fundamental rights provisions and Directive Principles should include the need for bail rather than remanding, mandatory monitoring of children in care, promoting easy, inexpensive and expeditious justice, while specifying that the Supreme Court could be petitioned with regard to action or lack of action on the part of the State that seemed to violate the Directive Principles.
